‘Dear White People’ Activates Generation Woke

Hey everyone!  The Indie-Lancer is back!  Thank you all so much for your patience.  I am so grateful for you.  I truly appreciate every view, comment, criticism and compliment you each bestow upon me.

I’ve wanted to do a post about the Netflix show, Dear White People, for a while now.  Although the controversy and criticism of the series may seem like stale news, its sentiment and importance can never lose timeliness.

Dear White People, based on the satirical movie of the same name, follows a group of black college students coping with discrimination at a fictional Ivy League university.  The main character, Samantha White, hosts a radio show within the campus called ‘Dear White People’, a joking, yet very serious, attempt to inform the predominantly white campus of the blatant racism within the school.

As a black girl who has attended predominantly white schools in both her primary and secondary education, I can say with certainty that the issues within the show are incredibly relevant.

This show is truth, and many people cannot handle the truth. Frankly, if you find the show offensive, you either live in a state of blissful ignorance or intentional racism.  Most importantly, viewers must note that much like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the series contains a great deal of satire.

Prior to watching the show, I myself was in a slight state of blissful ignorance.  The title completely threw me off.  It’s incredibly provoking.  At first, I viewed the words “Dear White People” as a pure sign of hateful resentment.  A way to point a finger at white people without any aim to remedy racial tensions.

However after watching the show,  I see that my assumption couldn’t be any more false.  Instead, the title serves as a bold introduction to the pure, bitter truth of reality.  Much like a form of hazing, the title initiates viewers into the fraternity of, what I like to call, Generation Woke.

Although the term “woke” associates with the Black Lives Matter movement, I define the group as one far more diverse than that.  A group of politically and socially aware people, Generation Woke sees the ugly truths of discrimination and fights in whatever way they can to promote equality, acceptance and tolerance.

If you were hesitant to watch Dear White People solely for its title, I urge you to look past it.  The show’s satirical humor and powerful content enlightens rather than upsets.
